Marriage
A marriage license is the seal of a legal binding contractual agreement between a man and a woman. These agreements are usually spelled out at the wedding or before as "vows". When one or several of the agreements are breached there can be a lawsuit filed for breach of contract, or a dissolution of marriage - divorce. It is considered a civil case. Below is the standard vow exchange where there may not have been vow exchange for whatever reason, or it there is slight variance due to religious preference.
Example of vow exchange:
______________ do you take ________________ to be your lawful wedded wife?
"I do."
Do you promise to love, honor, and cherish her forsaking all others and holding only to her?
"I do."
Then the same is repeated and performed by the wife to be. Then:
I___________take you, _______________, to be my lawful wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer and for poorer, and I promise to love you. All of the above with this ring. (and the ring is placed on the wife's finger.)
Then the same is repeated and performed by the wife to be.
Divorce
Divorce is a new contractual agreement that generally declares the husband and wife to part on terms agreed upon. If the man owns everything based on the paperwork filed (car(s), house(s), etc.) then the wife gets half, unless otherwise agreed upon, or vice versa. A prenuptial agreement is a contract signed by both bride and groom stating that if there is a dissolution of marriage, no finances are to be split by either individual. These are usually signed before the marriage is performed.
Several acceptable reasons dissolution has been accepted by the courts include: lack of trust (infidelity), needs not being met, marriage has "run its course", abandonment, difference in upbringing, domestic violence, etc.
